No, the jewelry is not sharp, and it is surprisingly durable. The fusing process rounds out the sharp edges of the glass, and a stage called “annealing” makes the glass quite stable. Also, because the pieces are so small and relatively thick, they are very unlikely to break. We’ve seen one of our pendants dropped onto a tile floor without damage of any kind.
Naturally we don’t recommend this treatment of the jewelry, as it can chip the glass or bend the wire, but should you drop your jewelry, there is a good possibility it will come away unharmed.
Heavy is a relative term, and some glass jewelry is quite large and can weigh several ounces, but to us Kula Creations jewelry is not heavy. In fact, most people who have been concerned about its weight and then picked up a piece of our jewelry expressed surprise at how light it is. But only you can say if it is heavy to you.
A small pendant or single small earring (the smallest item we carry) weighs less than half an ounce; it weighs about as much as a quarter and a dime together. A large pendant (the largest item) weighs about the same as four quarters - less than one ounce.
To avoid distorting the wire or scratching the glass or wire, it is best to keep your Kula Creations jewelry in a separate box or compartment in your jewelry box. Don’t apply excessive pressure to the wire wrap (for example, rub gently, not vigorously, when cleaning), as the glass nearest the wire is most vulnerable to chipping.
You can clean your jewelry with mild soap and water and a soft cloth, or, if you prefer, it may be dipped into a jewelry cleaning solution, then rinsed in water. If the silver begins to tarnish, lightly rubbing it with a silver cleaning cloth usually brings the shine back, or you may gently apply silver polish to the wire, then rinse it clean. Avoid abrasives.
Gold-filled is not the same as gold-plated; it is actually much higher quality and more durable. 14K gold-filled wire is a tube of 14K gold filled with a base metal, generally brass, and contains 100 times as much gold as a comparable gold-plated item. Care for gold-filled jewelry just as you would solid gold jewelry. Under normal wear conditions, it can last for generations.
The process to make a piece of Hawaiian Quilt jewelry is somewhat different than that to make a piece of petroglyph jewelry. Both processes are detailed on this page about our handmade glass jewelry.
